Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.-- James Madison, The Federalist Papers
Among the many misdeeds of British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest.--Mohandas Gandhi, An Autobiography
One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms.-- Constitutional scholar and Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, 1840
Merrill is a strong supporter of the United States Constitution, which includes the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms.
Our Constitutional Republic has given the people of the United States more freedom, opportunity and security and a better lifestyle open to even the humblest among us than available in most of the rest of the world.
Merrill believes our government was set up to protect and to serve, not to indoctrinate and control, and one of the foremost ways of controlling a citizenry is to take away its ability to protect itself.
Minnesota currently has the 12th most restrictive gun laws among states in the country. In a state that so prizes the self-reliance of outdoorsmen and -women and the self-protection of its citizens, this seems unnecessary.
Minnesota is unique in that its State Constitution did not codify firearms status, perhaps because the original writers assumed Second Amendment rights were naturally given.
Born in Minneapolis in 1937, Merrill grew up in a time when there was no great antipathy towards weapons as a means to protect one’s self and family.
With the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, and the seemingly constant barrage of citizens firing upon students, co-workers, and strangers, Merrill understands the need for sanity when it comes to gun laws.
However, with his ample life experience, Merrill has seen evidence that restrictive gun control laws don’t help communities--they hurt them. In the interest of keeping all Minnesotans safe and free, Merrill supports 2nd amendment rights.
